NORTHERN KENTUCKY WARRIORS

TAKE BLUEGRASS TROPHY

The Northern Kentucky Warriors secured an 8 to 7 victory over the Sayre School Spartans to capture the Bluegrass/East Region Middle School Boys Lacrosse Championship!

Saturday, May 9 saw the sun rise on a blustery but ultimately amazing day of lacrosse at The Lexington School. Hosting the bluegrass/eastern region middle school boys lacrosse tournament, despite a week of rain, the fields were painted, the end lines had brand new balls, and the referees were ready for a full day of intense lacrosse action!

The first games of the morning belonged to the winners of the first round of the tournament held on Thursday, May 7 at the higher seeded teams.

  • LYLA Lexington Lizards (#7) v. The Lexington School Colts (#2)

  • Tates Creek Titans (#6) v. Sayre School Spartans (#3)

  • Lexington Catholic Knights (#5) v. N. Kentucky Warriors (#4)

  • With a 16-2 win over the Lizards, the Colts advanced. With a 12-0 win over the Titans, the Spartans advanced. And, with an 8-5 win over the Knights, the Warriors advanced.

Saturday began with reversals of fortune for the top-seeded teams in the conference as both the Beaumont Middle School Colts (#1) and The Lexington School Colts (#2) fell to the lower seeds. With a profound new goalie and varsity coach Erik Johnson acting as Head Coach, the Sayre School Spartans (#3) scored four quick goals on the TLS Colts and held them to only two in the entire game. The final score with the Spartans on top was 4 to 2. Meanwhile, the Beaumont Colts fell to an aggressive and protective defense coordinated by Tom McKee's Northern Kentucky Warriors (#4) scoring only one goal to Northern Kentucky's 4.

Lunch time found conciliation games between the Lexington Catholic Middle School Knights (#5) and the Beaumont Middle School Colts. Much as the day had prepared, the Knights prevailed over the Beaumont Colts by a margin of four goals, capturing a win after their initial first round loss.

Meanwhile, in an amazingly close game between two new conference teams, the LYLA Lexington Lizards clutched an overtime 8-7 victory on the Tates Creek Middle School Titans. The Titans had been dominating the scoreboard well into the third period when fatigue appeared to challenge their ranks. The Lizards took advantage of the moment using depth and the steep learning curve developed from a hard-fought year to come back by three goals and force the OT. Celebration was heard throughout Beaumont Park as the LYLA Lexington Lizards captured their first win of the season in the final moments before the championship game was to begin!

While the 4th and 5th grade All-Star game was featuring players from the Lizards, Warriors, and TLS Colts as the future of Bluegrass Youth Lacrosse, the Spartans and Warriors were keeping a close game on the championship field. Ultimately prevailing with their 8 to 7 victory over Sayre to capture their second regional trophy in three years, Northern Kentucky prevailed as a dominant force in the east! Under the instruction of Coach Tom McKee with solid practice facilities and competition that includes both Louisville and Cincinnati teams, the Warriors continue to demonstrate the power of tenacity and importance of "goal-setting".
